Kilter is a short and sweet new work from Melbourne based contemporary circus company One Fell Swoop. Against a backdrop of irreverent commentary and perplexing visuals, a polished and powerful young duo mesmerise and synchronise with an evocative soundtrack of live music from Melbourne’s violinist beatsmith, ORCHA.
Using some never before seen apparatus, joy and risk plays out principally upon a slack rope strung on an enormous crescent of rolled steel arcs. Summoning tension, gasps and applause this perilous playground rocks with elegant harmonious symmetry alongside a toybox of other acrobatic devices only the brave and trained would dare to mess with.
The work is said to take a fresh look at the intersection of science and art while asking ‘how do we maintain balance in a turbulent world?’ Kilter offers an illustration of the mathematics and physics that underlies the acrobatics we are witnessing. As a home for innovative contemporary performance, St Kilda’s Theatre Works is the perfect venue for One Fell Swoop to premier this work as part of Melbourne Fringe Festival.
The strength, trust and dexterity of performers Charice Rust and Jonathan Morgan is as delightful as their sharpened theatricality. It’s gratifying indeed to see the produce of seriously good training, evident hard work and great opportunity.
Director and company co-founder, Jonathan Morgan suggests Kilter “speaks beautifully of what it’s like to move through life – one step at a time.” I suggest marvelling, smiling and supporting these lovely young performers as they enrich our city with abundant creativity in spite of the usual sleight of hand from the sports machine at this time of year.
